Light as an architectural element
Light is the most powerful, yet intangible, material we work with. It has the ability to completely alter the perceived volume, color, and emotional resonance of a room within a matter of hours.
Our approach to lighting begins with the sun. We study the orientation of a building to understand how natural light will enter throughout the day. This dictates everything from space planning—putting the breakfast nook in the east-facing window—to the selection of paint colors that respond well to shifting shadows.
“Without light, there is no space. It is the invisible architecture that defines everything we see.”
When the sun goes down, artificial lighting takes over. We avoid harsh, flat overhead lighting, instead creating 'pools' of light using hidden architectural fixtures, wall sconces, and low-level lamps. This layering creates depth, intimacy, and drama, ensuring the space feels as beautiful at midnight as it does at noon.
